SAFARI IN SOUTH AFRICA
Mighty Greater Kruger
Mighty Greater Kruger

Safari at Greater Kruger National Park is of the highest quality and the likelihood of
spotting the Big 5 is of the highest probability

HIGHLIGHTS

Be captivated by the majestic Big 5 at Greater Kruger National Park

Join a walking safari among giraffes and antelopes in the unique Greater Kruger

Enjoy world-class food and wine after a game drive among hippos, elephants and lions

The Kruger National Park, which is over two million hectares, as large as Israel, is located in the provinces of Mpumalanga and Limpopo in northeastern South Africa. Kruger National Park is the largest national park and one of the world’s wildlife-rich parks. Adjacent to the national park are many private game reserves and together this area forms the “Greater Kruger National Park”. Greater Kruger National Park includes the private game reserves; Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Makuya, Letaba, Balule, Klaserie, Umbabat, Manyeleti. In Greater Kruger there is a big chance to spot the Big 5 but is of course dependent on the season as well as skilled guides and “hawk-eyed” trackers.

Upplev Sydafrika recommends a safari in one of the private game reserves and accommodation in a private lodge in Greater Kruger, where usually the price is all inclusive, which includes all food (3 meals a day) and 2 guided game drives per day. In private game reserves, experienced guides and trackers are allowed to drive off road, to get closer to the animals. Many of these reserves are adjacent to the Kruger National Park, which allows free movement of all game, allowing sightings of a huge variety of animals. Some lodges offer bush walks or walking safari with specially trained guides and during the walk you focus on the small 5 (the elephant propeller, the buffalo weaves, the leopard turtle, the myrion, the rhinoceros beetle) and learn more about plants and nature. There are many lodges in different price ranges that offer fantastic safari experiences.

As safari is one of Upplev Sydafrika’s biggest passions, we have been diligent over the years and visited many safari lodges. As soon as we get an opportunity, we reach for the bush to explore and experience new Game Reserves and lodges. We have visited all the lodges listed below and want, through our personal experience and on-site knowledge, to guide you to the ultimate safari experience.

Wonderful nature and a guide (Safari was his name) who was very skilful and knew all animals and plants, he also had the ability to remember all our names and our individual wishes from day 1. The tracker (Victor) was also absolutely wonderful and our own personal butler (Friday) a great guy. The managers and the rest of the staff were also absolutely fantastic and very accommodating. Nothing to complain about and we had Bushbucks outside the veranda. It was fantastic to be out in the bush and spot all the animals, luckely we manage to see all BIG 5 after we have seen the leopard at the last moment. LONDOLOZI GUEST REVIEW – READ MORE

We were so friendly and pleasantly welcomed and nicely cared for and even though we didn’t arrive until 3 pm in the afternoon we were served a delicious lunch so we all could get prepared for the afternoon game drive. Our ranger, Sean, and our tracker, Rob, who became our cicerones were really professional. Although animals were not in abundance, with the exception of impala, we managed after a lot of driving and spotting to suddenly encounter a rhino and a hippo and a giraffe and an elephant and a lion and a leopard and even a cheetah very close up, so after each game drive we got back to the lodge with many exciting experiences and nice photos. We of course wanted to see the big 5 before we went home but the great herd of buffaloes had already left the area and had not been spotted in two weeks time. However, there were a few single buffaloes remaining that didn’t manage to follow the large herd but of course it was very difficult to find them. So, after much searching we gave up. And then something very extra ordinary happened. When we were about to pack and get ready for our journey back home, a lonesome buffalo came strolling past outside the lodge. Unbelievable!! If we ever get the opportunity to experinece another safari before we get too old, we will definitely go back to Londolozi!”

NKORHO GUEST REVIEW – READ MORE

“Sitting at the airport in Johannesburg, so overwhelmed after our absolutely fantastic trip. Everything has worked perfectly well throughout the whole trip, with the culmination this morning on a magic morning safari. We then got to see nine lions lapping water 2 m from the car, and due to that we have now seen all the Big Five. In addition (perhaps brutally and crudely) we saw some hyenas that had just caught a newborn hippo. Our fantastic ranger Pieter said that it was a unique scene.”

You can travel to South Africa all year round, but we recommend going September to May

Healthcare is good in South Africa. Even so we suggest obtaining a sound travel insurance before departure

As a EU and UK citizen, you will receive a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival in South Africa

To ponder before travelling:

The so-called “peak season” in December / January is very popular indeed and requires booking of accommodation, safaris, activities and restaurants well in advance.
