Day One

Arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport where you will be met and assisted through immigration and customs by our airport representatives. You will then be taken through for your domestic flight to South Luangwa National Park. This flight is approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. On arrival at Mfuwe Airport you will be met by a representative from Norman Carr Safaris and driven to Kapani Lodge, which is approximately a 1 hour drive. You will drive through Mfuwe Town which is a fascinating drive – giving you an insight into local life.

South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa is Zambia’s premier park. Many places are claimed to be ”one of the remaining wilderness areas” or ”one of the last wildlife sanctuaries” but the South Luangwa National Park can live up to all these names and more. The Luangwa Valley is vast, remote and home to both people and a truly impressive number of animals. It was none other than explorer David Livingstone who first recognised the extraordinary allure and unique nature of the South Luangwa Valley. Crossing the Luangwa River in 1866, he declared, “I will make this land better known to men so that it may become one of their haunts. It is impossible to describe its luxuriance.” It wasn’t until 1938 that the area was proclaimed a game reserve, and then given national park status in 1971. In 1961 the legendary Norman Carr put the Luangwa on the map as a safari destination leading the first walking safari in the reserve.

Over 60 different species of mammal call the South Luangwa National Park their home, drawn by the diverse range of habitats from sandy seasonal river courses to the mineral-rich alluvial floodplains that stretch out to distant blue hills. Predators such as lion, leopard and wild dog stalk the smaller game, whilst primates such as yellow baboons and vervet monkeys swing through the trees. Down on the river, huge densities of elephant, hippo and crocodile enjoy the cool waters. The South Luangwa National Park is 9050 sq. km with the river, its tributaries and the riverine strips being the focus of the wildlife viewing. There are the diverse habitats, from huge ox bow lagoons of varying stages of maturity, woodlands, ebony groves, grassland and thickets, that host truly impressive numbers of wildlife. The birdlife is also excellent with around 450 species to be seen. The Luangwa River remains one of the last untouched major river systems in the world. Each year the river drops to almost knee deep and then in the Emerald Season rises to the top of the banks. The river is up to 4 meters deep and averages 400 meters wide and at peak will flow at 47 million gallons per hour.

Days One – Four – Kapani Lodge, South Luangwa

Operated by one of the oldest companies in the National Park, Norman Carr Safaris Kapani is situated on the banks of one of the Luangwa River’s many ox-bow lagoons. It is located close to the main Mfuwe area of the South Luangwa just outside the park. The brick and thatch rooms are designed for the warmer weather with high ceilings, overhead fans and large gauzed windows. A thatched building in the centre of the lodge houses the lounge and library. It is pleasantly cool in the hot weather and warm and cozy in the cooler months. There is also a lovely swimming pool.

Over the next few days, you will have the opportunity to explore the Luangwa’s many different species on game drives and walking safaris. Walking safaris are conducted by Professional guides and accompanied by an armed National Parks Scout. These are a fascinating, more detailed view of the park ecology and of the wildlife as well as a chance to dive more deeply into dung, or ultimately to track game on foot either using spoor or with a little help from birds and animals who “alarm” in the presence of predators. Walks usually last for three-four hours and are commonly taken in the morning when it’s cooler. Drive/walk combinations of a 2-hour walk with a 2-hour drive are also offered. During the day you can either relax by the pool or enjoy just relaxing in the lodge overlooking the lagoon and doing a spot of game viewing. Late afternoon you can go out on an afternoon game drive, continuing into a night drive, allowing you the chance to see the nocturnal animals of the Luangwa. You will also have the chance to visit a local school and village which are supported by Norman Carr Safaris and get an insight into local life.

Day Four

Today you will fly back to Lusaka, and on arrival you will be taken through to your waiting vehicle for a road transfer to Kanyemba Lodge, approximately 3 hour’s drive from Lusaka, depending on traffic.

Days Four – Seven- Kanyemba Lodge, Lower Zambezi

Kanyemba comprises 6 stone and thatch “rondavel” chalets, each with their own private deck overlooking the Zambezi River and full en-suite bathroom. Overlooking the river, the restaurant and bar allow spacious & relaxed dining. Meanwhile upstairs, guests can relax and enjoy the library and lounge with a view across the river – the perfect space to while away the afternoon! A swimming pool is situated on the banks of the river, with built-in benches that allow a retreat from the hotter hours of the day – whilst sipping a G&T and watching the elephants on the opposite bank.

The next 2 days will be spent exploring the Lower Zambezi River area both on the river and land. Activities include walking, canoeing, fishing and boat cruises as well as a full day trip into the Lower Zambezi National Park with a picnic lunch.

Day Seven

After an early breakfast you will be transferred back to Lusaka for your connecting flight to Livingstone. The flight to Livingstone is one hour, 10 minutes. On arrival at Livingstone Airport you will be met by a representative from Waterberry Lodge and driven through to the lodge.

Livingstone

Bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Victoria Falls is also known as the Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders” a name given to it by the Kolobo Tribe living in the area in the 1800’s. Columns of spray can be seen from miles away as 546 million cubic metres of water per minute plummet over the edge (at the height of the flood season) over a width of nearly 2km into a gorge over 100 metres below. The Victoria Falls Bridge, commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes in 1900 affords a magnificent view both down the gorge on one side and through to the Falls on the other as well as being the location of the bungee jumping activity, a must for the adrenaline seekers!

Days Seven to Ten – Waterberry Lodge, Livingstone

Located on the banks of the Zambezi River, Waterberry Lodge a lovely informal and friendly lodge, located 30 minutes outside of Livingstone on the Zambezi River. Its distance from Livingstone Town affords it some privacy and tranquility, but it is close enough for guests to still enjoy the many activities on offer in and around Livingstone. Waterberry is ideal for families, with a large garden and swimming pool and family chalets but also works well for couples. In-house activities offered by the lodge include a Tour of the Falls on the Zambian Side, Sunset Cruise, Fishing, Island Picnics, Guided birding walks, guided village tours, guided Tour of the Town and local markets.

A wide range of in-house activities are on offer to you included a guided tour of the Victoria Falls, Sunset or Daytime Cruises, fishing, islands picnics, birding trips local village tour or trip to the town and markets. The team at the lodge will help you plan your activities to ensure you get to see and do as much as possible. You can equally relax in the lodge gardens or by the swimming pool, sipping on a gin and tonic and enjoying the peace and serenity of the Zambezi River. There are also a number of additional activities that can be booked at an extra cost including elephant back safaris, walking with Rhino and Helicopter or microflight flights over the Falls.

Day Ten

Today you will fly back to Lusaka on a scheduled flight, and connect onto your departing flight from Zambia.

Optional 6 night Kafue Extension available for period June to October

Day Ten

On arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, you will be met by our representatives and transferred by road to Kaingu Lodge in the Kafue. This drive is approximately 4 and a half hours drive.

Days Ten to Thirteen – Kaingu Camp, Kafue National Park

Kaingu Safari Lodge is situated in the Namwala Game Management Area (GMA) on a spectacular and remote stretch of the Kafue River, approximately 400 kilometres north of the majestic Victoria Falls. The Kafue National Park, just opposite the lodge and only a 10 minute boat trip away, offers abundant game viewing. The Kafue River, with all its myriad of channels, rapids and islands lends itself to a range of exciting river based activities which include boat cruises, fishing, birding, canoeing and river trails. From the top of one of the large granite boulders in the Namwala GMA you will get a 360° view over nothing but nature! An historical iron smelter has been re-constructed in this area and a visit to the KaingU Trust School can be organised.

Set on raised individual private wooden decks, each overlooking the Kafue River, KaingU Safari Lodge comprises 4 double Meru-style tents with en-suite bathrooms, indoor showers and an open-air shower or bath. The tent’s additional thatched roof provides extra shade.

The team at Kaingu will sit with you and plan out your activities over the next few days which can include nature walks, game drives, canoeing and visits to the local school and community.

Day Thirteen

After a morning activity and breakfast, you will be transferred by road to Musekese Camp in the Kafue National Park. This is approximately a 3 hour transfer and you will arrive in time for a late lunch followed by an afternoon activity.

Days Thirteen – Sixteen, Musekese Camp, Kafue National Park

Musekese is a small, intimate and classically styled, traditional tented safari camp, situated on the banks of the Kafue River. Safari tents are basic but comfortable and bathrooms are open-air and grass thatch keeps the elements at bay whilst you bathe under traditional bucket hung showers, with hot water. Toilets are flush and cold water feeds into the sinks for washing. You will be hosted by the most highly regarded team of Kafue experts, Phil and Tyrone, who will take you under the skin of this incredibly remote, beautiful and diverse wildlife haven.

Musekese has a special feel, the sounds of the bush are in full flow, with leopard coughing at night, hippo snorting and the eerie call of the Scops owl, all adding to the ‘bush orchestra’ that plays out 24 hours of the day. Over the next few days you can explore this part of the Kafue through a variety of activities including walking, game drives, night drives, boat cruises, as well as a spot of fishing.

Day Sixteen

You will be transferred back to Lusaka by road today for your onward connecting flight out of Zambia. This is a five to six hour drive.
