Day One

Arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport where you will be met and assisted through immigration and customs by our airport representatives.

You will then transfer to the domestic terminal for your flight to South Luangwa. The flight to South Luangwa is approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. On arrival at Mfuwe Airport you will be met by a representative from Mfuwe Lodge and driven to the lodge – which is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. You will drive through Mfuwe Town which is a fascinating drive – giving you an insight into local life. You will then entre the National Park and have the chance of seeing some game before arriving at the lodge.

South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa is Zambia’s premier park. Many places are claimed to be ”one of the remaining wilderness areas” or ”one of the last wildlife sanctuaries” but the South Luangwa National Park can live up to all these names and more. The Luangwa Valley is vast, remote and home to both people and a truly impressive number of animals. It was none other than explorer David Livingstone who first recognised the extraordinary allure and unique nature of the South Luangwa Valley. Crossing the Luangwa River in 1866, he declared, “I will make this land better known to men so that it may become one of their haunts. It is impossible to describe its luxuriance.” It wasn’t until 1938 that the area was proclaimed a game reserve, and then given national park status in 1971. In 1961 the legendary Norman Carr put the Luangwa on the map as a safari destination leading the first walking safari in the reserve.

Over 60 different species of mammal call the South Luangwa National Park their home, drawn by the diverse range of habitats from sandy seasonal river courses to the mineral-rich alluvial floodplains that stretch out to distant blue hills. Predators such as lion, leopard and wild dog stalk the smaller game, whilst primates such as yellow baboons and vervet monkeys swing through the trees. Down on the river, huge densities of elephant, hippo and crocodile enjoy the cool waters.

The South Luangwa National Park is 9050 sq. km with the river, its tributaries and the riverine strips being the focus of the wildlife viewing. There are the diverse habitats, from huge ox bow lagoons of varying stages of maturity, woodlands, ebony groves, grassland and thickets, that host truly impressive numbers of wildlife. The birdlife is also excellent with around 450 species to be seen. The Luangwa River remains one of the last untouched major river systems in the world. Each year the river drops to almost knee deep and then in the Emerald Season rises to the top of the banks. The river is up to 4 meters deep and averages 400 meters wide and at peak will flow at 47 million gallons per hour.

Days One – Three – Mfuwe Lodge, South Luangwa

Ease yourself into Luangwa life with a stay at Mfuwe Lodge. Set inside the park, just five minutes’ drive from the main gate, the lodge’s allure is instantly obvious. Beneath a canopy of ebony and mahogany, its thatched buildings are arranged around the banks of two lagoons where an endless stream of wildlife will keep you enthralled as you lounge on the open deck or take a dip in the swimming pool. Thanks to a thorough refurbishment in 2010 the airy interior of the lodge is an exquisite complement to its natural surroundings.

This region of the park is renowned for its prolific game – giraffe, buffalo, antelope, crocodile are constant visitors to Mfuwe Lodge’s lagoon, whilst in November the local elephants regularly wander right through the lobby, lured by a nearby wild mango tree. Over the next two days you can enjoy Game Drives and Night Drives exploring the area. The hotter hours of the day will be back at the camp, relaxing by the pool watching the game in the lagoon or enjoying a spa treatment in the Lodge’s Bush Spa. You can also visit a local school supported by the Bush Camp company during your stay in this area and experience authentic village life, having the chance to meet some of the local residents and look in on one of the classes in the school.

Days Three to Six – Bushcamps

After a morning activity, brunch and some relaxation time, you will set out after afternoon tea for your trip to the Southern Part of the National Park and your bush camp for the next two nights. This journey will take between 2 – 3 hours but is a very scenic drive with the Chindeni Hills as your back drop and the chance of seeing many different animals and birds en route.

The bush camps all offer a very exclusive experience where you will likely not see any game drive vehicles or clients from other camps. You will spend the next three days exploring this beautiful area on walking safaris, game drives and Night Drives. All walks are accompanied by an armed National Parks Scout and give the opportunity to learn more about nature and its fauna, flora and many inhabitants that are often missed whilst on a vehicle. There are some beautiful places to explore around the channels of the Kapamba and South Luangwa Rivers and birdlife is prolific.

Day Six

After Breakfast you will depart the camp and drive back to Mfuwe for your flight back to Lusaka and connecting flight to Lower Zambezi. Your flight to Jeki Airstrip (Royal Airstrip during the period November to May) is approximately 35 minutes. On arrival at the Airstrip you will be met by a lodge representative and driven through to Potato Bush Camp.

Lower Zambezi National Park

At just over 4000 square kilometres, the Lower Zambezi National Park stretches in a narrow swathe from the Chongwe River in the west to the Luangwa River in the east. This is one of the prettiest National Parks in Zambia, with the Zambezi River forming a natural border to the park and the Zambezi Escarpment serving as a stunning backdrop. The park gently slopes from the Zambezi Escarpment down to the river, straddling two main woodland savannah ecoregions distinguished by the dominant types of tree, Miombo and Mopane: Southern Miombo woodlands on higher ground in the north, and Zambezian and Mopane woodlands on lower slopes in the south. At the edge of the river is floodplain habitat. The Lower Zambezi National Park is home to all of the major species in the valley with excellent sightings of elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard wild dogs, hyena, waterbuck, zebra, impala, bushbuck and kudu to name a few. Birdlife in the area is also outstanding, making this a real hotspot for ornithologists.

Potato Bush Camp – Days Six to Ten

Potato Bush is a small and intimate camp located just down steam from its sister camp Sausage Tree. The Camp consists of 3 Luxury Safari Tents and 1 Two-bedroom Family Tent all positioned along the river. The Tents are extremely spacious and have en-suite bathrooms with twin showers, twin basins and a full size four-claw bath tub. Large Rosewood folding doors lead onto the balcony which hosts a 2-person hammock and a private plunge pool, with well appointed furniture to compliment the ambience and architecture of the tents. Each Tent is shaded by huge Acacia Tortilis and Mahogany Trees. The entire camp is linked by raised timber board walks, enabling the camp to extend the safari season into early January.

Over the next 3 days your activities will range from river based activities such as canoeing, boat cruises and fishing to land based game drives and walking safaris. Combination activities work very well in this area. If visiting during the period November/ December your activities may be more focused on the river, depending on rainfall.

Day Ten

You will fly from Lower Zambezi to Lusaka for your connecting flight to Livingstone

Bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Victoria Falls is also known as the Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders” a name given to it by the Kolobo Tribe living in the area in the 1800’s. Columns of spray can be seen from miles away as 546 million cubic metres of water per minute plummet over the edge (at the height of the flood season) over a width of nearly 2km into a gorge over 100 metres below. The Victoria Falls Bridge, commissioned by Cecil John Rhodes in 1900 affords a magnificent view both down the gorge on one side and through to the Falls on the other as well as being the location of the bungee jumping activity, a must for the adrenaline seekers! There are many incredible ways to experience the Victoria Falls and its sheer size and magnificence, whether by air, either in a microlight or helicopter, white water rafting or Jet boating in the rapids below the Falls, or a more sedate canoe safari or sunrise or sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River above the Falls. There is something for everyone!

Islands of Siankaba – Days Ten to Thirteen

The Islands of Siankaba luxury lodge is located on two private islands in the middle of the mighty Zambezi River situated between the ‘Seventh Wonder of the Natural World’, the magnificent Victoria Falls, and the world famous Chobe National Park. This lodge has been developed as a luxurious five star retreat with outstanding cuisine and uncompromising levels of personal service to exclusively sleep just fourteen guests. Each of Siankaba’s seven secluded chalets have been uniquely designed to maximize comfort and privacy whilst boasting spectacular views of the Zambezi River. The unique feature of the lodge is the series of walkways and bridges that link the two islands together.

The quirky design incorporates the use of natural materials that blend in with the feel of the surrounding bush while taking full advantage of the beauty of the riverine setting. The Islands of Siankaba is the perfect retreat for discerning travelers who wish to witness the wonderful Victoria Falls yet also escape the crowds and enjoy being in an area of exceptional natural beauty with quiet, unspoiled surroundings.

Spend the next three days enjoying a wide range of activities from viewing the Victoria Falls to Sundowner cruises and Mokoro trips, Guided Nature Trail walks and a Cultural Tour of the Local villages on foot or mountain bike.

Day Thirteen

After breakfast, you will depart the lodge and be taken to Livingstone Airport for your flight back to Lusaka and onward connection.

Optional 3 night Kafue Extension available for period June to October

Day Thirteen

On arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, you will be met by our representatives and taken through to your scheduled flight to Busanga Plains in the Kafue National Park. This flight is approximately one hour 10 minutes. On arrival at the airstrip in the Busanga you will be met by your guide and transferred through to Shumba camp.

Days Thirteen – Sixteen – Shumba Camp, Busanga Plains, Kafue National Park

Shumba Camp is situated in the centre of the Busanga Plains close to permanent water and within easy access of the teeming floodplains. Shumba is named after a favourite species in the area: prides of lion sometimes up to 20 strong! Viewing of game species is possible from the comfort of the tent or main deck, while the camp’s fig trees ensure both shade and constant bird activity.

The Tents are all on raised platforms with spectacular views. The dining area is elevated so as to take in this vista and each morning’s sunrise; dinner takes place either here or in the cosy boma where guests can also enjoy elements of local Zambian culture.

Guests have the option of game drives in and around the Plains and water-based activities when the Plains are still inundated, while night drives provide the added excitement of the nocturnal wonders of the area. During the period August to October there is also a Hot Air Balloon Morning Activity included in 3 night stays.

Day Sixteen

After breakfast you will be taken to the airstrip for your return flight to Lusaka, and onward connection.
